More bellringers needed at Itchingfield

Would you or some of your family like to join us?

You would be joining an activity like no other.

We practice on Friday evenings and ring for Sunday morning services held at the church.

There are opportunities to go on ringing outings, ring for special occasions, join in with other bands of ringers and ring in some amazing places both in this country and in other parts of the world. There is duty involved of course and appearing on Sunday mornings is important, though attending services for which you ring is not essential.

Ringers are an extremely mixed bunch covering all ages and walks of life, but there are two things they have in common – enthusiasm and friendliness.

Ringing is just tremendous fun. First you learn to control a bell swinging high above you using only a piece of rope. Strange as it may seem, this is quite easy when you know how – like riding a bike or driving a car. Once you can do this, you move on to ringing in time with other people, and then to learning change ringing.

Unlike most worthwhile skills, ringing tuition comes entirely free.

Qualifications are:

  • Age between about 9/10 and 65 or so.
  • Ability to raise arms in the air
  • Basic sense of rhythm (no other musical skills needed)
  • Ability to count to 5 forwards and backwards

Our tower is built entirely of oak; we believe it to be the only example of its kind in the country.

When the bells are swinging, the tower rocks as it is actually a separate structure from the main church building (interesting experience).

Visiting ringers are most welcome. Please email to let us know you are coming.
We ring for morning service (usually 10.30 for 11.00am service on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month.
Practice is on Friday evenings, 7.30pm to 9.00pm.

We have five bells and a first floor ringing chamber. The bells are easygoing and they sound lovely!

The Itchingfield band was re-formed in 1998 for ringing in the millennium, after a gap of over a decade.

We are fortunate indeed to have the support of many local experts who give of their time and knowledge freely. In particular, George Francis and Val Atkins of nearby Warnham. They have guided and encouraged into the world of bellringing and continue to train and support us on a weekly basis.
